1950s Toiletries

Toiletries enjoyed pride of place at the front of Woolworths stores in the early 1950s

Toiletries and cosmetics enjoyed pride of place at the front of the store in Portsmouth in 1950.  The highest price visible is 5/- (5 shillings or 25p) - 12 times higher than the maximum in 1939.

Showcases were installed at the front of the store, backing onto the window displays to show off the range of Fancy Goods in Woolworths in the 1950s

These showcases were on the back of the big display windows, straight inside the entrance.  They allowed the stores to show some of the range of fancy goods to advantage.  The items were always price-marked and often included an aisle number to help customers to find the product in-store.

A colleague straightens the display of toiletries in this mid 1950s Woolworths store

In the terminology of the day, this colleague was "on the toilet" - an abbreviation for working of the Toiletries Counter !
